Can you reface cabinets a second time?
Cabinet refacing is an affordable way to upgrade your cabinetry—better yet, it’s a process that can be repeated down the road if your tastes have changed or your cabinet doors are looking worse for wear. A cabinet refacing project isn’t designed to last a lifetime, as most people may find that they need to repeat the project within 20 years or so. The good news is, refacing your cabinets a second time is a fairly standard process.
How to Reface Cabinets
A cabinet refacing project generally only takes a few days to complete, depending on the number of cabinets in your kitchen or bathroom. You’ll get to select the look of your new cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and hardware, and once those items have been custom-manufactured to your specifications, the project will begin.
First, the installers will remove all of the cabinet doors and drawer fronts and responsibly dispose of them. The cabinet boxes will remain in place and a thick veneer will be installed on them, which will improve their durability and ensure they can stand up to wear-and-tear for decades. Then, your new cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and hardware will be installed, providing your kitchen or bathroom with an elevated look in far less time than a traditional cabinet replacement.
Choosing Between Cabinet Refacing & Cabinet Replacement
If your cabinets have already been through a cabinet refacing project and you’re ready to upgrade their look again, it’s a good idea to first do a thorough inspection of your cabinets. What is the reason you want to invest in a second cabinet refacing? Is it because:
- The cabinet boxes are rotted, damaged, or otherwise in bad shape?
- You’re unhappy with the layout of your cabinets and you want to add more cabinets or change the structure in some way?
If you answered yes to either of these questions, then a cabinet refacing project is not the right choice for you. Instead, it may be time to invest in custom cabinets, in which your old cabinets will be torn out and new ones will be built in. It’s common to want to make this change if your cabinets are really old or your needs have changed as your family has grown.
However, if your cabinet boxes are still in great shape and you’re still happy with the way your cabinets are laid out, then another cabinet refacing project may be exactly what you’re looking for!
